Snorkel is with pig

Posted on February 2, 2013 at 1:09 AM Comments comments (0)
Our cute little Captain Cook pig suddenly is looking quite rotund and quite possibly could be pregnant. Not sure what she will do with the piglets as she rotates from paddock to paddock with the cows. Poor thing. We are feeding her for 20 now. (This is a photo from 3 months ago. I will attached a current one soon so you can see the difference.)

Easterly wind

We have had easterlies for 2 weeks now steadily. No boating at all. More easterlies are forecast for the next week! First time in 10 years this has happened in the summer! We have a bit of a drought also and all the plants need a drink soon. Garry still gets out mowing, so no work worries.

Garry went out for an early fish today. He was fishing for snapper using soft bait on a light rod and to his surprise he caught this beautiful Kingfish. They battled for 45 minutes but Garry perservered. Kingfish makes beautiful sashimi served with wasabi and soy sauce. Yum.
He went mowing this afternoon!

Posted on December 10, 2012 at 11:33 PM Comments comments (1)
Getting mowing done for Xmas. Garry is hard at work getting all the sections up to date and tidy for the Christmas period. Lots of growth lately with generous rain and warm, beautiful sunny days making the grass grow. I got him to give our propery a mow when he came back today, so it all looks tidy and beautiful.

I saw this beautiful flower on a huge tree in Kerikeri. The tree must be 20 meters high and is covered with these blossoms. The leaves are large and shiny green. Does anyone have any idea of what tree it is?

Planted 150 native trees and lots of flax

Posted on November 28, 2012 at 1:56 PM Comments comments (1)
We have a bit of a slip area and we decided to plant it up to prevent erosion. We put in lots of free flax and also got about 150 little native trees to intersperse among the flax. They are all doing well and one day we will have a native forest here.

Garry went for a dive today (still drysuit weather) and got 2 crayfish! Both nice sized ones.

Nice conditions with no swell and light wind. They caught some snapper also, so we have a nice feed in our future.

Nesting blackbird

The usual nesting spot is in our carport, but for some reason this year she decided to try the precarious spot atop a punga log in our side garden. Our lounge window looks out right onto her and her nest building activities. Can't wait for the baby birds!

Puheke Hike

Posted on November 12, 2012 at 12:23 AM Comments comments (0)
Garry mowed this morning and this afternoon we decided to drive over to Puheke and take a hike. It is on the other side of Doubtless Bay, in the same harbour as Hohoura. It is a great hike, up a small extinct volcano and then across to the beach and then a loop back.
